Last week, I was working from my client’s office in Hong Kong where we are currently deep into a large project together. I usually enjoy the energy in this newly established open-plan office overlooking the harbour. It’s a young and dynamic team, and the atmosphere reflects that. After WWII, Berlin was divided between the four victorious powers (UK, US, Russia and France), but the city itself lay deep inside the Soviet zone. In June 1948, the Western allies introduced a new currency — the Deutsch Mark — in their Western zones to stabilise the collapsing economy.
When the currency reform reached West Berlin, the Soviets saw it as a challenge and sealed every road, rail line and canal. More than two million people in West Berlin were suddenly cut off from food, fuel, and medical supplies.
The Allies now faced a stark choice. Abandon Berlin or try the impossible by attempting to supply a whole city by air.
And so, the Berlin Airlift began.

Have you ever heard of saturation diving? Me neither, until I came across a remarkable story, that has been beautifully brought to life in a newly released film.
Saturation divers are the brave men who carry out complex technical work in the offshore oil & gas industry—maintaining, inspecting and building underwater infrastructure like pipelines, manifolds and platform legs. The challenge is that they work at depths of around 100 to 300 metres below sea level.

It was one of those days. I was traveling to see my parents in Germany and had to transit at Frankfurt Airport. I had built in sufficient buffer time to manoeuvre the massive airport. But things took a turn when I realised the transit required me to practically exit the airport and queue again at security.
