It was the highly anticipated 2020 European Championship semi-final between England and Denmark, where 60,000 mainly English fans were hoping their team could make some history by reaching a final of a major tournament for the first time in 55 long years.

In the 30^th minute, the Danish player, Mikkel Damsgaard, put the ball down for a free kick 25 yards outside the English goal. He took a final look at the goal and smashed the ball into the back of the net. Denmark 1 – England 0.

The “perfect heart” for a life well lived

A good friend of mine (Thanks a lot Emma!) recently shared a wonderful story with me, which I immediately felt compelled to “steal” and share it with you:

“One day, a young man walked into the village square and declared he had the most perfect heart in the whole valley. A crowd gathered around him and all admired his heart, because it was, indeed, perfect. No stains, no defects. Yes, they agreed, it was the most beautiful heart they had ever seen. The young man was proud and boasted even more about his beautiful heart.

Suddenly, an old man appeared from the crowd and said, ‘Listen, your heart is half as beautiful as mine.’

Das „perfekte Herz“ für ein gut gelebtes Leben!

Eine gute Freundin von mir (Vielen Dank Emma!) hat mir kürzlich eine wundervolle Geschichte erzählt, die ich sofort „stehlen“ und hier mit Euch teilen muss:

„Eines Tages betrat ein junger Mann den zentralen Platz seines Heimatdorfes und erklärte vollmundig und in tiefster Überzeugung, er habe das vollkommenste Herz im ganzen Tal. Eine Menschenmenge versammelte sich um ihn und alle bewunderten sein Herz, denn es war in der Tat perfekt. Keine Flecken, keine Mängel. Ja, stimmten sie zu, es sei das schönste Herz, das sie je gesehen hätten. Der junge Mann war stolz und prahlte noch mehr mit seinem vermeintlichen Schatz.

Plötzlich tauchte ein alter Mann aus der Menge auf und sagte: ‚Hör zu, dein Herz ist nicht mehr als halb so schön wie meines.‘

Was getan ist, ist erledigt – „Feierabend“!

Mein absoluter Favorit unter den buddhistischen Mönchen (und gleichzeitig auch Lieblingskomiker) Ajahn Brahm erzählte einmal die Geschichte von einem seiner „Kollegen“, der den Bau einer neuen Halle in seinem Kloster in Südthailand beaufsichtigte. Die Arbeiten seien bis Anfang Juni gut vorangekommen, berichtete er, was auch wichtig war, denn dann beginnt die Regenzeit, in der die Mönche aufhören ihre „weltlichen“ Arbeiten zu verrichten, um mehr Zeit mit Meditationen und kontemplativem Lernen zu verbringen.

Als nun die täglichen Monsunregen einsetzten, befahl der Abt, die Tätigkeiten auf der Baustelle einzustellen und schickte alle Arbeiter nach Hause.

Das Kloster blieb allerdings weiter für Besucher geöffnet. So kam es, dass einige von ihnen sowohl das unvollendete Gebäude als auch die ruhig in innerer Einkehr versunkenen Mönche sahen. Und so fragte einer der Besucher den Abt, wann denn der Bau der neuen Halle abgeschlossen sein würde. Der Abt antwortete: „Die Halle ist fertig!“

What is done is finished – “Feierabend”

My favourite Buddhist monk and comedian, Ajahn Brahm, once told the story of a fellow monk, who was overlooking the building of a new hall in his monastery in southern Thailand. The work progressed very well until the beginning of June. That’s when the rainy season sets in, usually lasting until October. During this time, the monks stop doing their regular work and spend more time in contemplative study and meditation. It’s often referred to as “Buddhist lent” or “rain-retreat.”

As the daily monsoon downpours began, the abbot ordered a stop to the work on the construction site and sent all the workers home.

It happened that during that rainy season some visitors came to the monastery and saw the unfinished building and the abbot sitting quietly in reflection. With no builders in sight, a visitor asked the monk when the construction of the hall would be finished. The abbot without any hesitation answered, “The Hall is Finished!”
